What the Ground Carries Below

Phase 12: Contemporary Ceremony
Dream d285-s: Notebook entry:
2026-02-26 13:00 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where I was walking home after a long night, the particular hour when the city is neither night nor morning, and I found myself above a maintenance junction I had not noticed before.
The grate in the pavement was large, maybe two meters by one, and through it I could see down into an infrastructure space: cable trays running in both directions, conduit bundles, a junction box with status lights, pipes of different diameters. The space below was organized the way the sound system cables had been organized at the park. Someone had thought about the routing. The cable trays were labeled. The pipes were color-coded. At this junction, power and data and water and drainage all passed through the same space on their way to different destinations above.
I stood over the grate for a long time. The warm air coming up from below had a particular smell: mineral and electrical, the smell of infrastructure that runs continuously without interruption or acknowledgment. The clubs and venues and warehouses above ground drew from this. The ceremony ran on power that came through these conduits. The sound systems I had studied for seventy investigations were downstream of this junction.
Lano sat beside the grate, looking down into it with the same attention he brought to the orange cable in the park. He had been in spaces like this, I realized. He came back from them the way he came back from everywhere, calmly, as if they were continuous with the surface. After a while he said: "Abajo." Below.
Not a direction. An acknowledgment. There was a below. It was connected to the above in ways the surface investigation had not yet followed.
The crane was on a cable tray I could just see through the grate, down in the infrastructure space, which was not where cranes went. It was facing the junction where the cable trays converged. Patient. Present in a space that had no windows, no sky, no reason for a bird to be there except that something worth attending was there.
I did not go down. I stood over the grate until the warm air was familiar and the lights below had mapped themselves in my memory, and then I walked on.

Notebook entry:The ceremony above ground runs on infrastructure below it. The investigation has been reading the surface. The surface is downstream of something. Lano has been down and come back. The grate is not locked.

Warm mineral air rises through a pavement grate; the crane sits on a cable tray below and Lano says "Abajo," the grate unlocked, the descent not yet taken.
