Dream d394-s: Before the Day Opens

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the light was still gray when I reached the station, the sea a dark surface below and the sky barely lighter. The weather reader was already at the barometer, back to me, pencil in hand. He had been there since before I arrived.

"1007.8," he said, without turning. "Down from yesterday's baseline. A series is building."

He wrote in the log: time, temperature, pressure, wind direction from the roof sensor. The entry was complete before I had taken off my coat.

Lano was at the window, looking east. "Calma," he said. The early morning sea was still, whatever was building not yet visible on the surface.

I had been at the station long enough to understand the morning measurement's particular character. It is not the same as afternoon or evening readings. The morning reading is the first document of the day. Everything that follows is interpretation and response. The morning reading is the fact.

The weather reader moved to the rain gauge: 2.3 millimeters overnight. Recorded. Cloud log: high stratus at 1400 meters, thickening. Recorded. Each instrument in sequence, each entry a fact.

The Owl surfaced: measure from Latin mensura, from metiri, to measure, to apportion. Measurement as the act of giving something its proper amount. The morning reading gives each quantity its place in the record.

The automated log showed overnight alert history: two threshold crossings, at 23:40 and 02:15. The pipeline had dispatched messages while both of us slept. The investigation does not stop when the investigator rests.

The crane landed on the roof railing as the light began to come. I heard her feet on the metal. She did not call. She was simply present for the first reading, as she had been for others.

Lano came away from the window and pressed against my leg. "Juntos," he said.

The weather reader closed the morning log, first entry of the day complete, and moved to put on the kettle. The tea was made from rain collection water. I had drunk it every morning I had been here.

I thought: this might be the last cup.
