Dream d410-s: The Road Opens North

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the coast road began where the last warehouse district ended, a clear line where the tarmac changed color from the dark grey of the city interior to the pale salt-bleached surface that ran north along the water. Lano crossed that line without pausing. He did not look back.

I did.

The city was still visible: the low skyline, the cranes at the harbor, the elevated rail line catching the morning light. The underground was in there somewhere, its entrances sealed behind doors in basement corridors I would not return to. The ceremony venues were open or closed depending on the hour. I had no information about the hour. I turned back to the road.

The bag was heavy in the way it had not been before the notebooks filled. Three of them now, their spines solid against my back, the fourth just started, its pages still mostly blank. The wind came off the sea in long flat gusts and pushed at my left side. I adjusted the strap.

Lano was fifteen meters ahead, his small white shape moving at a consistent pace along the road's edge where the tarmac met the gravel shoulder. He did not vary his speed for the wind. His tail was up. He looked back once, confirmed I was following, and faced forward again.

The sound of the road was different here: fewer vehicles, more wind, the sea audible on the left as a steady background frequency that was neither loud nor quiet but simply present. The smell was salt and something mineral from the exposed stone of the embankment. The city smell was already gone.

I did not think about where the road went. The road went north. Lano went north. I followed Lano.

At the first kilometer marker, a pale post with the number worn to near-illegibility, Lano stopped and looked at me. Not waiting. Marking the point. His mouth opened once: "camino."

I touched the marker as I passed it. The stone was cold from the night and already warming on its seaward face.

The city was not visible when I looked back from this point. The road had curved enough. There was only the road, the embankment, the sea on the left, and Lano already moving again.

---

Carried north: Three filled notebooks, one open. The ceremony knowledge as felt knowledge in the body, not as something that needs to be returned to.
