Dream d419-s: Both Animals Still

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the ground floor room had been cleared of everything except the projector on its stand and a white wall at the far end. Not painted white. Plaster, slightly uneven, the marks of old shelves still visible as pale rectangles where the sun had not reached. The Dreamer had decided this room was the screen.

They were threading the film when I came in, feeding the strip through the gate with careful fingers, not looking at the film itself but at the mechanism, checking the tension. Roberto was on the windowsill, watching the operation with what looked like professional attention. He had seen this before.

Lano came in behind me and went immediately to the wall, put his nose to the plaster, smelled the old shelves-shapes, the history of the room. Then he came back and sat beside me.

The Dreamer switched off the overhead lamp, leaving only the projector's beam. The image hit the wall.

It was a ceremony crowd seen from above, the one we had worked with as a still photograph, but here in motion: people moving into the space, the pattern building slowly, the concentric arrangement forming over thirty seconds as bodies found their places. The film was old. The grain was large. The plaster's unevenness was visible through the image, the shelf-marks showing faintly under the crowd.

Neither Lano nor Roberto moved.

I had been in that room. Not that exact room, but that exact distribution of bodies, that gradual formation. It had felt one way from inside it. From above, in silence, on old film, it looked like something else: a tide coming in. A system settling into equilibrium.

The Dreamer did not speak.

The loop ended. The film clicked through the gate and the white wall returned, empty.

"That is the first image," the Dreamer said. "We do not know the last one yet. But the sequence begins there."

Roberto stepped from the windowsill to the projector housing, placed one paw on the feed reel, looked at the Dreamer. The Dreamer nodded once. Roberto stepped back.

Lano exhaled, a long slow breath, and lay down on the floor with his head facing the white wall.

Old film strikes the uneven plaster and the ceremony crowd forms from above in silence; neither Lano nor Roberto moves. From outside itself, the investigation looks like a tide arriving.
