Dream d516-s: The Journeyman's Ledger

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Philosopher lifted a book from the lower shelf, the one with water damage along the spine, and did not open it yet. They set it on the table between us. Rain moved across the stone outside. Lano lay under the table with his chin on my foot, breathing slowly.

The Philosopher said: before I open this, tell me what you owe the Dreamer.

I said I didn't know how to answer that.

They opened the book.

The study was gone. I was standing on a wooden floor that smelled of sawdust and tallow, in a long room with low beams. Men and women worked at benches along the walls. They were cutting, fitting, measuring. A board at the far end held a sheet of rules in large letters. I moved toward it. Lano walked beside me, his nails clicking on the planks.

The rules were not about wages. They said nothing about payment. They were about what a journeyman must demonstrate before they could call themselves a craftsman. Not what they must purchase. What they must make. What they must show they had understood by making it.

A master stood at the board with a piece of chalk. He was adding a clause. The new clause said that the work must be done in the presence of someone who already knows it, so the knowing can be checked. Not the doing alone. The knowing.

I watched a young man carry a finished piece to a table where three older craftsmen inspected it without speaking. They turned it. They held it to the light. One of them tapped a joint and listened.

No money changed hands. What changed hands was judgment. What changed hands was standing.

The floor dissolved. I was back in the study, the book closed, Lano at my feet again.

The Philosopher lifted my notebooks from the corner where I'd left them and set them on the table without opening them either.

They said: you have been keeping a ledger.

They said nothing else. They went to make tea.

I sat with the notebooks for a long time while the rain came harder against the window. I opened the first one. The images were all there -- the paired sequences, the marks, the things the Dreamer had shown me and asked me to hold until I understood them. I had thought of this as learning. As receiving.

I sat there until I understood what kind of record it actually was.

Lano put his head in my lap. The tea kettle began to sound.

Note

A guild hall smelling of sawdust and tallow: craft judged by what is made, not bought. The notebooks were never a record of receiving -- they were proof of work.
